ChatGPT Ads Arrives in Spain and LATAM: What It Means for Brands and How to Measure It

TL;DR — On August 24, 2026, OpenAI activated advertising in ChatGPT across 31 European countries including Spain. Mexico and Brazil have had active ads since August 11. It is the largest geographic expansion of OpenAI's advertising platform to date — and it turns ChatGPT into a direct advertising channel for brands operating in Spanish-speaking markets. Ads appear on Free and Go plans, not on Plus, Pro or Enterprise. Brands already investing in digital advertising have a new question to answer: are we appearing in ChatGPT as advertisers, and can we measure it?

When OpenAI announced in January 2026 that it would test advertising inside ChatGPT, many in the industry received it with skepticism. Sam Altman had described ads in ChatGPT as a "last resort" barely a year before.

What followed made clear that the skepticism was premature.

February: ads in the US. May: expansion announced to the UK, Mexico, Brazil, Japan and South Korea. August 11: live in those five markets. August 18: OpenAI announces the largest geographic expansion in its advertising history. August 24: ads are active in 31 European countries, including Spain, France, Germany, Italy and the entire EEA zone.

In less than seven months, ChatGPT went from being an advertising experiment in the US to being an advertising platform with presence in 40 global markets, including the two most important for the Spanish-speaking market: Spain and Mexico.

How Ads Work in ChatGPT

Ads in ChatGPT appear clearly labeled and kept separate from the model's responses. Advertisers do not have access to users' conversations, and advertising does not influence the responses ChatGPT generates.

Only users of the Free and Go plans see ads. Plus, Pro and Enterprise subscribers maintain an ad-free experience.

For advertiser access, brands initially access European inventory through the OpenAI Ads Solutions team, agency partners and technology partners. Self-serve access via Ads Manager will come later in the year.

On targeting, in the European Economic Area and Switzerland there is no personalization at launch, so there is nothing to consent to yet. That differentiates the European launch from the US one — where the platform already incorporates geo-targeting and custom audiences.

The advertising platform has evolved quickly: it has expanded beyond CPM and CPC bidding to include conversion optimization, added geo-targeting and custom audiences, introduced the OpenAI Pixel and Conversions API to measure outcomes beyond clicks, and added third-party measurement integrations.

Why This Changes the Game for Spanish-Speaking Brands

Until August 24, a Spanish brand that wanted to appear in ChatGPT had only one route: organic positioning — working its AI visibility through content, entity authority and consensus signals in external sources.

Now there is a second route: direct paid advertising in ChatGPT.

The difference from traditional advertising formats is the context in which the ads appear. People increasingly use ChatGPT to research products, compare alternatives and work through purchasing decisions by explaining their goals, preferences and constraints in natural language. That creates an opportunity for advertisers to reach users while they are actively evaluating what to do or buy — potentially with a richer intent signal than a standalone keyword or a passive social media impression.

For Mexico and Brazil, which have been active since August 11, this is no longer a projection — it is an operational reality. Brands with digital advertising budgets in those markets can already reserve advertising space in ChatGPT.

For Spain, August 24 was day 1.

The Question No Brand Can Ignore

With ads active in Spain and Mexico, there is a question marketing teams now need to answer:

Is our brand appearing as an advertiser in ChatGPT? In which prompts? How often? Which URLs are receiving that traffic?

In SEO, that question has an answer in Google Search Console. In Google Ads, in the campaign dashboard. In Meta Ads, in Ads Manager.

In ChatGPT Ads, until now there was no specialized tool for the Spanish-speaking market that answered those questions systematically.

GEO Metrics Ads: The Module That Measures AI Advertising

GEO Metrics is developing the first AI advertising measurement module in the Spanish-speaking market, designed specifically to answer those questions.

The metrics it will offer:

Ad appearances — how many times a brand appears as a sponsored result in ChatGPT and AI Mode responses in a given period. With historical evolution and period-over-period comparison.

Share of Ads (SOV Ads) — percentage of the brand's sponsored appearances over the total ad appearances in the category. The equivalent of organic Share of Voice, applied to the AI advertising space.

Prompts triggering ads — which specific queries are generating advertising appearances and how frequently. The answer to the most critical question for any advertiser: in which conversations is my brand appearing?

Ad destination URLs — which site pages are receiving traffic from AI ads. To connect advertising investment with landing pages and subsequent user behavior.

Temporal evolution — how advertising presence changes over time, crossed with the percentage of responses that include the ad.

The module will be available in September 2026. Large brands that want early access are already signing up with the team.

Organic and Paid: Two Metrics That Now Need to Be Measured Together

The arrival of ads in ChatGPT introduces a distinction the Spanish-speaking market has not yet fully processed: the difference between organic visibility and paid visibility in AI.

Organic visibility is what GEO Metrics measures in its base platform: how often a brand appears in AI-generated responses in a non-sponsored way, at what position and with what sources. It is the result of content work, entity authority and external signals.

Paid visibility is what the Ads module will measure: when a brand appears as a sponsored result, in which prompts and with which destination URLs. It is the result of direct advertising investment in the platform.

Brands that only measure one of the two will not have the complete picture. A brand can have excellent organic Share of Voice in ChatGPT and zero Share of Ads because it has not yet activated campaigns. Or it can have high Share of Ads and low organic Share of Voice — which means its presence in responses depends entirely on the advertising budget and disappears when it is turned off.

The most solid strategy combines both dimensions: building organic visibility in a sustained way while leveraging advertising to accelerate presence in high-intent, high-conversion prompts.

What Spanish-Speaking Brands Should Do Right Now

If you operate in Mexico or Brazil: ChatGPT ads have been active since August 11. If your competition is already reserving advertising space in ChatGPT for those markets, they have a two-week head start. Contact OpenAI Ads Solutions or a partner agency to understand the access options in this initial phase.

If you operate in Spain: August 24 was the activation date. The platform is in a managed access phase — accessed through the OpenAI team, not self-service yet. Self-serve access via Ads Manager will come later in the year.

For all markets: set up a GEO Metrics project now with your most strategic category prompts. Organic visibility data is the baseline against which you will understand the incremental impact of advertising when you activate it.

And if you want to be among the first to measure your Share of Ads in ChatGPT when GEO Metrics' Ads module is available in September, sign up now for early access.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are ChatGPT ads already active in Spain? Yes. OpenAI activated ads in 31 European countries including Spain on August 24, 2026. They appear for users of Free and Go plans. Plus, Pro and Enterprise users do not see ads.

How does a Spanish brand access ChatGPT Ads? In this initial phase access is managed — through the OpenAI Ads Solutions team, partner agencies and technology partners. Self-serve access via Ads Manager will come later in the year.

Do ads influence the responses ChatGPT generates? No. OpenAI has confirmed that advertising is clearly labeled, separate from the model's responses and does not influence the content ChatGPT generates. Advertisers also do not have access to users' conversations.

What is Share of Ads and why does it matter? Share of Ads (SOV Ads) measures the percentage of a brand's sponsored appearances over the total ad appearances in its category on ChatGPT. It is the central metric for understanding how present a brand is in the AI advertising space — equivalent to Share of Voice but for paid ads.

What is the difference between organic and paid visibility in ChatGPT? Organic visibility is the result of content work, entity authority and external signals — what GEO Metrics measures in its base platform. Paid visibility is the result of direct advertising campaigns in ChatGPT — what GEO Metrics' Ads module will measure. Brands need to measure both dimensions to have the complete picture of their AI presence.

When will GEO Metrics' Ads module be available? In September 2026. Brands that want early access can sign up with the team directly at trygeometrics.com.
